GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING PAPERS

Topic  i : Review of action taken on the recommendations of the previous meeting

Sugar factories/Cane commissionerate/Department of Agriculture and research institutions are requested to furnish the details of action taken on the recommendations made in the previous meeting as per the details given hereunder:

S.No
Recommendation/Action point
Action taken
1.
Sugar factories in Northern Karnataka region should come forward to send Status reports and Action Taken Reports in time.

2.
Sugar factories should study the effect of harvesters and other machinery on soil compaction on a long term basis

3.
The possibility of legalization of the deduction for extraneous matter in mechanical harvesting of cane in the Sugarcane (Control) Order 1966 should be considered (Cane Commissionerate/Department of Agriculture, Govt. of Karnataka)

4.
Popularizing sugarcane mechanization including inter cultural operations and harvesting among the growers by sugar factories

5.
Research on intercropping in sugarcane should be holistic in nature. Before choosing intercrops, the factories should work out the economics, adaptive behaviour of the intercrop to the local conditions and local marketing facilities and then recommend.

6.
Wide row planting of sugarcane has to be promoted by factories for encouraging inter-cropping and mechanized harvesting.

7.
Agronomical techniques such as Raised bed / FIRB (Furrow Irrigated Raised Bed) methods should be modified and promoted among farmers by the factories.

8.
In addition to Co 86032, new varieties/pre-release promising clones should be evaluated and a varietal composition of 4-5 varieties should be maintained by the factories.

9.
A large gap between potential yield and average yield has been observed from the status reports. When the mean yield of a particular variety is below 60 % of its potential yield, it should be replaced with suitable varieties procured and evaluated from ARS, Sankeshwar and ICAR-SBI, Coimbatore.

10.
Before introducing any new/unknown variety in the region, ICAR-SBI, Coimbatore or ARS, Sankeshwar should be consulted.

11.
As data on varietal status in sugar factories is vital, all factories in Northern Karnataka should send their status reports on varietal position in the factory areas in time for inclusion in the Compendium.

12.
Based on the experimental evidence, it is recommended to conduct co-ordinated evaluation of potential varieties. ICAR-SBI, Coimbatore in collaboration with ARS, Sankeshwar and SNSI, Belgaum may co-ordinate the trials in select factory locations in Northern Karnataka. The modalities need to be worked out. (ICAR-SBI, ARS, Sankeshwar/SNSI)

13.
The 3-tier nursery programme should be rigorously followed by all the sugar factories to maintain genetic purity and sustain productivity.

14.
Factories should send feedback on the performance of the seed material lifted from research institutions. A database on this information should be maintained by both the research institutions as well as sugar factories.

15.
DUS characters of different varieties of sugarcane that are available will be made available by ICAR-SBI for use by sugar factories. (ICAR-SBI)

Topic ii: Pest management in Sugarcane including White grubs

Major pests and their general distribution in different divisions of factory area and occurrence of hot spots - Succession of pests in a single crop and general seasonal pattern in the crop zone - Localized pest outbreaks in presumable hot spot areas - General crop losses due to pests - Pest monitoring and damage assessment programme currently adopted
