“Schedule irrigation, Save water" campaign

The Sugarcane Breeding Institute (of the
Indian Council of Agricultural Research), Coimbatore organized a "Schedule irrigation, Save water"
campaign in Dharmapuri district. The event was organized under 'Farmers'
Participatory Action Research Programme (FPARP)' at Dharmapuri district Co-op
Sugar Mills, Palacode, Dharmapuri district during 27-29 June 2011.
During the campaign, sugarcane growers were sensitized on the benefits of scheduling their irrigations. Demonstrations
of simple devices such as Soil Moisture Indicator & Tensiometer, used for
scheduling irrigations, were conducted. Water samples from the sugarcane
growers were tested, participatory discussions on implementing FPARP were held,
besides an exhibition and distribution of inputs and extension
material. This was followed by a ‘farmer-scientist-cane development
personnel question-answer
session’.
