Sugarcane Breeding Institute – Indian Sugar Industry: National Interactive Workshop

Coimbatore; June 26-27 2012

A National level Interactive Workshop is being organized by Sugarcane Breeding Institute and the Indian Sugar Industry, with the support of the South Indian Sugar Mills Association, to commemorate their 100 years of growing together, during 26-27 June 2012 to discuss various issues pertaining to sugarcane agriculture in the context of the growing needs of the Sugar Industry.
 
The workshop will provide a platform for personnel from sugar & allied enterprises and development departments, researchers and Agri-business representatives to share their experiences on issues related to sugarcane agriculture and the sugar Industry.

Registration for the workshop closes by June 22, 2012.

Subsequent to a brief introductory feature telecast on 15 April 2012, Doordarshan – Pothigai (பொதிகை தொலைக்காட்சி ) will telecast a feature on the FPARP (Farmers’ Participatory Action Research programme) Sensitization Workshop on 22 April (Sunday) from 6 am onwards.

 P.S: The third episode on Soil Moisture Indicators (one of the technologies evaluated in FPARP) will be telecast on 23 April (Monday) at 6 am

Centenary Sugarcane Breeders and Pathologists meet held
As part of its centenary celebrations, Sugarcane Breeding Institute of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research organized a National level Breeders and Pathologists meet on 23.1.12.
            The meeting was organized in collaboration with the All India Coordinated Research Project on Sugarcane and the Society for Sugarcane Research & Development, Coimbatore. Scientists from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Assam, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu participated in this one-day meet and discussed issues relating to:
  1. Breeding strategies for improving productivity and disease resistance
  2. Refining the disease screening methods for more reliable, reproducible results
  3.  Complimenting disease resistance with chemical and biological control methods for      effective management of diseases in sugarcane.
